Telegram quiz bot for team and community groups
Hijinks is a team-games bot that runs trivia, icebreakers and word games inside a Telegram group — the same games it runs in Slack and Discord, for a flat price per organization. Here is how it works on Telegram.
Who it is for
Plenty of teams coordinate on Telegram: startups, agencies, remote companies in Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, volunteer groups, study cohorts and customer communities. Most quiz bots on Telegram are built for one-off public quizzes, and the workplace trivia apps with scheduling and leaderboards mostly ship for Slack and Microsoft Teams only. Hijinks is built for a group that wants a recurring ritual: a weekly round, a daily question, icebreakers on a Monday.
How a round works in a group
- One command.
/hijinksposts a card with a button for each game and the subcommands it understands, such as/hijinks leaderboardor/hijinks start. Telegram’s command menu lists them with a short description of each. - Live rounds. The question posts to the group with answer buttons under it. Everyone has 30 seconds by default (adjustable from 15 to 60), then the bot reveals the answer and moves on. The leaderboard posts at the end.
- Async rounds. The group gets an announcement and a deadline. Each member taps Start quiz and answers in their own private chat with the bot, so nobody copies the fastest typist and people in other time zones get a fair shot. Results post back to the group when the deadline passes. Telegram only lets a bot write to people who have opened a chat with it once, so the bot links that chat wherever it is needed.
- Typed answers in Rebus, Charades and the word games are a reply to the bot’s message; typos are forgiven.
- Private answers stay private. In Know Your Team, a button in the group opens your chat with the bot, and the answer you give there is never shown in the group.
What you can play
- Trivia from a shared question bank, multiple choice, with True/False and Emoji Rebus rounds. New questions on current events are added daily; they pass an automated sensitivity screen, and any it flags wait for human review. Every question card has a Report question button.
- Icebreakers: Would You Rather, Hot Takes and Most Likely To polls, plus Small Talk prompts. The full English bank is on the icebreaker questions page.
- Word games on the Team plan: Wordle, Anagram and Hangman.
- Team rituals: Charades, Pictionary, birthday and work-anniversary Celebrations, Virtual Coffee 1:1 intros and Know Your Team.
- Schedules on Pro and Team: recurring rounds and an all-day trivia question that post on their own.
- Leaderboards weekly, monthly and all-time, with category champions.
Admins, the dashboard and pricing
The group’s creator and admins, and whoever added the bot, manage it: they can stop a game, create and pause schedules and start a new leaderboard season. To manage the group from the web dashboard at app.hijinks.team — schedules, custom questions, members and plan — you connect the group to your dashboard account by typing a one-time code from the dashboard into the group.
Each group is its own workspace, and one plan covers every workspace your organization connects, priced flat and never per member: Free is $0 for 10 games a day and up to 10 players per game, with every category open; Pro is $5 a month for unlimited games and 50 players per game, with custom questions; Team is $15 a month for unlimited games, 200 players per game and the word games. Annual billing gives two months free.
The bot acts only on its commands, its buttons and replies to its own messages; everything else in the group is ignored and no message content is stored. Data stays on EU servers. The security page has the details.
Also on Slack and Discord
The same games, question bank and dashboard run on Slack and Discord, so a company on Slack and its community on Telegram can use one bot. See the guides for a Slack trivia bot and a Discord quiz bot, or how Hijinks compares with other trivia apps.
Frequently asked questions
How does a quiz bot work in a Telegram group?
You add the bot to the group. Anyone in the group starts a round with /hijinks; in a live round the question appears with answer buttons under it and everyone taps their answer before the timer runs out. In an async round the group gets an announcement with a deadline, and each member answers privately in their own chat with the bot.
Does the bot read our group chat?
Hijinks acts only on its own /hijinks, /help and /start commands, taps on its buttons and replies to its own messages (how typed answers arrive in Rebus, Charades and the word games). Every other message is ignored, and no message content is stored; in private chats only game answers are recorded. Data is hosted in the EU.
What does Hijinks cost for a Telegram group?
Pricing is flat per organization, never per member, and one plan covers every group it connects: Free at $0 (10 games a day, up to 10 players per game), Pro at $5 a month (unlimited games, 50 players per game) and Team at $15 a month (unlimited games, 200 players per game, word games). Annual billing gives two months free. Hijinks is in private beta; paid plans open at launch.
Who can change the bot’s settings in a group?
The group’s creator and admins, and whoever added the bot. They can stop a running game, manage schedules and start a new leaderboard season. Every member can start a game, answer and check the leaderboard.
