Discord quiz bot for communities and work servers
Discord has plenty of trivia bots, and almost all of them are built for gaming communities. Workplace trivia apps mostly skip Discord altogether. Hijinks runs the same team games on a Discord server that it runs in Slack.
The gap on Discord
If you search for a Discord quiz bot you will find bots that are free, fast and tuned for large public gaming servers: quickfire rounds, cosmetic unlocks, global leaderboards. Those are great for what they are. They are not designed for a 30-person company server, a customer community, or a study group that wants a recurring Friday round, async play across time zones and an admin who can see what is going on.
Meanwhile the apps built for workplace trivia — the ones with scheduling, async quizzes and team leaderboards — tend to ship for Slack and Microsoft Teams and leave Discord out. Hijinks sits in that gap.
What Hijinks runs on a Discord server
- Slash commands to start a round, change settings or check the leaderboard, with the same command vocabulary as the Slack and Telegram versions.
- Buttons under each question for live rounds: 30 seconds per question by default (adjustable from 15 to 60), everyone in the channel answering at once.
- DMs for async rounds: the channel gets the announcement and a deadline, each player answers the bot privately, and results post back when time is up. Good for servers spread across time zones.
- Scheduled recurring rounds and an all-day trivia question on Pro and Team, so the ritual runs itself. The daily question takes one of your schedules and none of your monthly games.
- Icebreakers and social games: Would You Rather, Hot Takes and Most Likely To polls, Small Talk prompts, True/False, Rebus, Charades, Pictionary, Celebrations for birthdays and anniversaries, Virtual Coffee 1:1 intros and Know Your Team. The full English prompt bank is on the icebreaker questions page.
- Word games on the Team plan: Wordle, Anagram and Hangman.
- Leaderboards weekly, monthly and all-time, with category champions.
- Questions from a shared question bank. New questions on current events are added daily; they pass an automated sensitivity screen, and any it flags wait for human review. Custom questions and CSV import come with Pro and Team.
Permissions: who can do what
Hijinks adds one slash command, /hijinks. Its subcommands start and play games,
show the leaderboard, open each member’s own notification settings and, for the people who
run the server, control how games run.
- Every member can start a game, answer, vote, check the leaderboard and change their own notification settings.
- Members with Manage Server, and Hijinks admins (promoted on the dashboard’s Members page) can also stop a running game, create, pause and delete schedules, change a channel’s game settings, and start a new leaderboard season.
- Where games can start is a dashboard setting. List your events channel and a game started anywhere else gets a short reply pointing there instead. Leave the list empty and games can start in any channel.
- Leaderboard seasons:
/hijinks leaderboardwith “Start a new season” asks for confirmation, then every leaderboard counts from that day. Game history keeps every game.
To limit who can use /hijinks at all, or in which channels, use Discord’s own
controls: Server Settings → Integrations → Hijinks, then set the roles and
channels allowed to use the command. Discord enforces those before Hijinks sees anything.
Flat pricing, whatever the headcount
Hijinks does not count members. Free is $0 for 10 games a day and up to 10 players per game, with every category open. Pro is $5 a month for unlimited games and 50 players per game. Team is $15 a month for unlimited games, 200 players per game and the word games. Annual billing gives two months free. One plan covers every server and workspace your organization connects, and the dashboard at app.hijinks.team, the question bank and the games are the same on Slack, Discord and Telegram, with Microsoft Teams planned after launch.
Everything is hosted in the EU, the bot does not read message content, and Celebrations store birthdays as month and day only.
If you are coming from a Slack trivia app
Our guide to what to look for in a Slack trivia bot covers the same checklist from the Slack side, and the compare pages set Hijinks next to Water Cooler Trivia, Ricotta and Trivia by Heron HR — none of which list Discord support. The same bot also runs in Telegram groups.
Frequently asked questions
How does a quiz bot work on Discord?
You add the bot to your server and pick a channel. Rounds start from a slash command or a schedule; in live rounds players answer with buttons under the question, and in async rounds each player answers the bot in a DM before the deadline. Results and the leaderboard post back to the channel.
Is Hijinks priced per Discord member?
No. Pricing is flat per organization, and one plan covers every server it connects: Free at $0 (10 games a day, 10 players per game), Pro at $5 a month (unlimited games, 50 players per game) and Team at $15 a month (unlimited games, 200 players per game, word games). Annual billing gives two months free. Hijinks is in private beta; paid plans open at launch.
Can one Hijinks account cover Slack and Discord?
Each workspace or server is its own subscription, but the games, question bank and dashboard at app.hijinks.team are the same across Slack, Discord and Telegram.
Can I stop members from starting games anywhere they like?
Yes. In the dashboard, list the channels where games can start; anyone who tries elsewhere is told where games run. Stopping games, schedules and leaderboard resets are for members with Manage Server and Hijinks admins. To limit who can use /hijinks at all, use Server Settings → Integrations.
Does the bot read messages on our server?
No. Hijinks reacts to its own slash commands, buttons and DMs only; it does not read message content, and in DMs it records only your game answers. Data is hosted in the EU.
